Bhagubai Changu Thakur College of Law, New Panvel, successfully organized the Late Shri Janardan Bhagat Memorial Lecture Series from 5th March to 7th March 2025 in the college seminar hall. The event was convened by Dr. Mamta Bhattacharjee (Assistant Professor) and Ms. Janhavi Bhoir (Librarian), with the first day's session led by Prof. Mrs. Anam Mehandikar. The program was conducted under the guidance of Mrs. Sanavi Deshmukh, the in-charge principal of the college. The inaugural session was graced by esteemed guests, including Ms. Archana Thakur (Member of JBSP Sanstha). The guest speaker for the first day, Professor Sheetalkumar Sethia Department of Law, University of Mumbai, delivered an insightful lecture on the topic of "Public Interest Lawyering: Advocating for Justice and Social Change." His address garnered significant public interest, particularly due to the depth of discussion on Public Interest Lawyering and its role in empowering marginalized communities. Professor Sethia elaborated on the evolution of Public Interest Lawyering, tracing its roots in American law and its subsequent development in India. He emphasized the significance of Public Interest Lawyering and Public Interest Litigation in amplifying the voices of the underprivileged and ensuring justice for those unable to access traditional legal remedies. He also explained the process of drafting PILs and highlighted their application in various fields, including consumer rights, environmental protection, fundamental rights, and social justice. The session proved to be an enlightening experience, successfully raising awareness about the impact of Public Interest Lawyering and Public Interest Litigation in driving social and environmental, constitutional and other changes in Indian laws. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Mrunal Patekar, while Ms. Chaitrali Kane skillfully anchored the session, ensuring seamless coordination throughout.
