As a part of the Practical Training Programme for the students of BALLB and LLB Courses, an educational visit to Mumbai Central Prison, Byculla, Mumbai was organized on 26th September 2026. The main objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to prison administration, jail rules, prisoners' rights and the facilities provided to prisoners by the State Government. During the visit, the students were introduced to the functioning and administration of the prison. They gained practical knowledge about the Maharashtra Prison Manual, 1979, and learned how various rules and procedures relating to the management of prisoners are implemented in practice. The visit helped students connect their classroom learning with the actual working of the prison system. An important aspect of the visit was understanding human rights and the rights of prisoners. Students learned that although prisoners are deprived of their liberty as a consequence of imprisonment, they continue to be entitled to humane treatment, dignity, basic necessities, medical care and other rights recognized under law. The visit helped the students appreciate the importance of protecting human dignity within the correctional system. The students also observed and learned about the various facilities provided to prisoners by the State Government. These include proper food, medical and healthcare facilities, sanitation and other basic necessities. Students were also informed about arrangements that enable prisoners to maintain communication with their family members and access legal assistance. A significant part of the visit was learning about the use of technology in prison administration, particularly the facility of video conferencing. Such facilities help facilitate communication and court-related proceedings while maintaining appropriate security arrangements. The students gained an understanding of how technology is increasingly being used in the administration of prisons and the criminal justice system. The visit was particularly useful from the perspective of practical legal education. It enabled the students to relate their theoretical knowledge of criminal law, constitutional law, human rights, prison administration and criminal procedure with practical observations. The students also gained an understanding of the importance of rehabilitation, correction and welfare in the modern prison system.
